Texas weather
Cold-weather generator operation
Cummins air-cooled standby generators are rated to run from -40°F, so in a Texas freeze its temperature rating is not the limit. What needs attention is the battery, propane vaporization or gas pressure, and below 0°F a unit without the cold weather kit (Cummins part A054B984, factory-fitted on the E models).
The machine is rated for far worse than Texas gets
Operating range: -40°F to 122°F (-40°C to 50°C)
The official low at DFW Airport during the February 2021 freeze was -2°F on 16 February (National Weather Service, DFW temperature extremes), well inside that range. The three things below are what need attention.
1. The battery
A lead-acid battery delivers less cranking current as it gets colder, and a standby generator asks for all of it at once. A battery that has been quietly declining through a Texas summer can start the unit at 70°F during its weekly exercise and then fail to turn the engine over at 15°F.
Battery checks and replacement have their own page: generator battery maintenance.
2. Propane vaporization
Natural gas avoids this problem because there is no tank to chill. It is not immune to a freeze, though: it depends on the utility keeping pressure in the main, and that can fail when demand peaks. During Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, Atmos Energy lost service to homes in parts of Grand Prairie, citing extraordinarily high demand, and residents reported going three days without gas. A generator on low gas pressure may not start or carry its load. Propane stored on site does not depend on the pipeline, which is its real advantage in a freeze, as long as the tank can keep up.
Propane is different, because an LP tank has to do work a gas meter does not. The fuel is stored as liquid and has to boil into vapor before the engine can burn it. That boiling happens at the wetted surface inside the tank, and two things reduce it at exactly the wrong moment: cold slows the rate, and a tank low on liquid has less wetted surface to boil from. A tank that has run a generator for two days in a freeze is both colder and emptier than when it started.
The practical answers are a tank sized with margin rather than to the minimum, and filling it before a freeze rather than after one starts. What "with margin" means in gallons, and the continuous vaporization rate to ask your supplier for, are set out in propane tank sizing for a standby generator. If you have not chosen a fuel yet, this is one of the real differences between them: natural gas, propane or diesel.
3. The cold weather package
For installations that go below 0°F. Not needed on the AE and ACE models, which already include it. The kit is Cummins part A054B984, and it can be fitted at installation or retrofitted later.
The E-suffix models already include it, which makes the decision a straight price comparison rather than a specification question:
| Without the package | With it included | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| RS13A — $4,419.04 | RS13AE — $4,815.30 | $396.26 |
| RS17A — $5,326.86 | RS17AE — $5,576.63 | $249.77 |
| RS20AC — $6,868.48 | RS20ACE — $7,131.91 | $263.43 |
| RS20A — $5,925.25 | RS20AE — $6,300.85 | $375.60 |
Equipment prices at the Cummins suggested retail price. The E models are the same generator with the package fitted at the factory.
What to do before a freeze is forecast
- Check the battery holds charge. Cold is when a marginal one fails.
- Fill the propane tank, do not top it up. More liquid means more wetted surface and more vaporization, as well as more runtime.
- Run it under load once. A crank-only exercise proves the starter. It does not prove the machine will carry the house.
- Clear the intake and exhaust. Snow or ice drifted against the enclosure can block airflow.
The first three are part of a service visit, so book one before winter: maintenance and service plans. If the unit has remote monitoring fitted, a failed exercise is reported to you, and to your dealer if you have chosen to route alerts to one.
Questions
Will a standby generator work in a Texas ice storm?
Yes. Cummins rates these units to operate from -40°F to 122°F (-40°C to 50°C). What needs attention is three things around the generator: the battery, which loses cranking power as it gets colder; the fuel, whether that is propane vaporization or natural gas pressure in the main; and, below about 0°F, whether a cold weather kit is fitted.
Do I need a cold weather kit in Dallas-Fort Worth?
Cummins recommends it for installations that go below 0°F. DFW does not get there most winters, but the official low at DFW Airport on 16 February 2021 was -2°F (National Weather Service). The E-suffix models (RS13AE, RS17AE, RS20ACE, RS20AE) already include the package. On the models without it, the kit is Cummins part A054B984 and it can be fitted at installation or later.
Why do propane generators struggle in a freeze, and is natural gas safe from that?
Because a propane tank has to do work that a gas meter does not. LP arrives as liquid and has to boil into vapor before the engine can burn it, and that boiling happens at the wetted surface inside the tank. Cold slows it, and a tank that is low on liquid has less wetted surface to boil from, so the two problems compound exactly when you need the machine most. Natural gas has no tank to chill, so it avoids that particular problem, but it has a different one: it depends on the utility keeping pressure in the main. In February 2021, during record demand, Atmos Energy lost service to homes in parts of Grand Prairie, and some residents were without gas for days. A propane tank on site does not depend on the pipeline at all, which is the trade-off between the two.
What should I do before a freeze is forecast?
Check the battery is holding charge, because cold is when a marginal battery fails to crank. If you are on propane, get the tank filled: a fuller tank lasts longer and vaporizes better. And run the generator once under load so a problem shows up before the outage does.
Does cold change how much fuel the generator uses?
The generator itself burns what its load demands, and that does go up in a freeze because the house is working harder. A long outage multiplies that consumption, which makes it a runtime and fuel-supply question: on propane, how many days the tank lasts; on natural gas, whether the utility holds pressure.
