Generator remote monitoring with Cummins ConnectCloud

Every Cummins air-cooled home standby generator, 13kW to 20kW, has ConnectCloud monitoring built in, which Cummins lists as a $299 value at no cost with no ongoing fee. The app shows whether the house is on utility or generator power, current faults and exercise dates, and can alert your dealer as well as you.

The problem monitoring solves

A standby generator spends almost its entire life not running. It sits outside through a Texas summer and a February ice event, exercises itself briefly once a week, and is then asked to carry the house without notice.

Several failure modes are silent: a battery that has aged out, a fuel supply shut off during unrelated gas work and never reopened, or a controller that has latched a fault and will not attempt a start. The controller does record what happened — it blinks the code on a light inside the enclosure — but a light in a side yard only helps if somebody goes and looks.

Remote monitoring turns those into an alert on the day they happen, to you and, if you choose, to your dealer.

What Cummins ConnectCloud includes

On the air-cooled home standby range, 13kW through 20kW, monitoring is built into the generator. There is no add-on radio to buy and no ongoing monitoring fee. Cummins lists it as a $299 value at no cost. When comparing brands, ask whether monitoring hardware and service are included or charged separately.

The app is available for Apple and Android. What the home screen answers:

What it reportsWhy it matters
Is the house on utility or generator power? The first thing the home screen answers. Useful the moment you are away and the neighborhood goes dark.
Is the generator available to power the home? Not the same question. A unit can be sitting healthy and still be unavailable — a tripped breaker, a disabled control, a fault it has latched.
Does it require service?Reported against the recommended interval, with the date of the last service alongside it.
Current alerts, including faults needing attentionThe live list. This is what your dealer is also seeing.
History of notifications and system changesWho changed the exercise schedule, and when it last faulted. Useful in a warranty conversation.
Last and next scheduled exerciseChangeable and overridable from the app.
Automatic start on outageOn or off, set remotely.
Remote start capability statusWhether the unit will accept a start command right now.

Dealer alerts

The owner can choose to route the generator's data to a Cummins authorized dealer. Once that is set up, Cummins alerts both the homeowner and the dealer when a problem arises.

For units we sell and install in DFW, we can be the dealer on the other end of that alert, so a fault that appears in April is handled on a scheduled visit in April rather than discovered during an outage.

Monitoring only helps if somebody is on the receiving end of it. Confirm with whoever installs your unit that they will accept dealer alerts for it, and that they will still be servicing DFW in five years.

The exercise schedule, from your phone

The weekly self-test is the noise your neighbors hear, and the app lets you move it, for example from early Sunday to a weekday mid-morning, without a service call. See how loud a standby generator actually is for the rest of that discussion, including crank-only exercise mode.

You can also skip an individual exercise from the app.

What it does not replace

Monitoring tells you the machine has a problem. It does not change the oil, load-test the battery, or verify that the transfer switch actually transfers. Those are physical checks and they still need a visit — see maintenance and service.

It is also not a substitute for running the unit under load. A generator that has self-tested faultlessly for a year and never carried the house has demonstrated that it starts, and nothing more.

Above 20kW

The liquid-cooled and enclosed diesel ranges are built around Cummins PowerCommand electronic control, the controller family Cummins uses on its commercial generator sets, with its own self-diagnostics.

What it is not is the same built-in consumer ConnectCloud radio that ships inside every air-cooled unit. Monitoring on those models is a specification question rather than something you can assume from the brochure. If remote visibility matters to you and you are buying at 25kW or above, say so before the order goes in and we will confirm exactly what the model on your quote includes.

Questions

Does Cummins remote monitoring cost extra?

On the air-cooled home standby range, no. The hardware is built into the generator and Cummins carries it as a $299 value included at no cost, with no ongoing monitoring cost. If you are comparing brands, ask each one whether monitoring hardware and service are included or charged separately.

What can I actually see in the app?

Whether the house is on utility or generator power, whether the generator is available to run, whether it needs service, current faults, the history of past alerts and changes, the date of the last and next exercise, the date of the last service and the recommended interval, and the status of remote start. You can also change or override the exercise schedule and set the unit to start automatically when an outage occurs.

Does my dealer get the alerts too?

If you choose. Cummins lets the owner route the generator's data to a Cummins authorized dealer, and then you and the dealer are both alerted when a problem arises. A fault found by an alert can be dealt with on a scheduled visit rather than discovered during an outage.

Do the liquid-cooled units have the same app?

The liquid-cooled and diesel ranges are built around Cummins PowerCommand electronic control, which provides the self-diagnostic capability, rather than the same built-in consumer ConnectCloud radio the air-cooled range ships with. Monitoring on those units is available but it is a specification question, not a given — ask before you assume it, and we will confirm it for the exact model on your quote.

Can I control the generator remotely, or only watch it?

Both, within limits. You can change the exercise schedule, override an exercise, and set automatic start behavior. Remote start capability is reported in the app. What you cannot do from a phone is anything that requires someone to look at the machine — a low coolant alarm still needs a visit.

Feature descriptions above are from Cummins dealer documentation for the 13–20kW home standby range and the Cummins ConnectCloud page. Capability on liquid-cooled and diesel models differs by model and configuration — we confirm it per quote rather than generalizing.

Already own a generator nobody is watching?

We service units we did not sell. If yours has monitoring built in and it was never commissioned onto an account, that is usually a single visit to put right.
